Built-in, hardware-based timer. The PC enters theft mode if it does not check in with the service provider or IT department server within a specified time interval. The trigger works regardless of network connectivity. Depending on policy, Intel AT can disable the PC by blocking its boot process thus preventing the system from booting from any device. Even if the hard drive is reformatted or replaced, the system remains disabled - a "brick".
